FYLSE Review Course

The California School of Law provides a review course to help its students prepare for the First Year Law Students’ Exam. This course is known as the FYLSE Review Course.

The School’s provision of the subject matter of the FYLSE Review Course begins on the first day of the School’s regular classes, through the use of the California School of Law 1st Year Student Program. This program contains: outlines of Torts, Contracts and Criminal Law; skeleton outlines of the law in Word; sample multiple choice and true and false questions; sample essays; flashcards; and, lastly, general information on how to excel in law school. These study aids will benefit students during their first year of study, as well as providing them with the foundation for the FYLSE Review Course.

The formal FYLSE Review Course will start four months prior to the administration of the First Year Law Students’ Exam by the California State Bar. During the first two months, the classes for the course meet on Wednesdays from 6-9 pm PST and on some scheduled Saturdays. This class time will provide the students with structured study time, lectures, and time for simulated exams, both for the FYLSE and the School’s final exams.

Students will be given practice MBE & essay questions, as well as timed tests in preparation for the FYLSE. At the end of each month students will have specific preparation “Milestones” they need to meet. As part of this process, a professor will review each student’s work, go over any areas needing improvement and make appropriate assignments to help each student become well prepared for the FYLSE.

Two months prior to the administration of the FYLSE, the FYLSE Review Course becomes more focused and intense, meeting on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 pm PST, and on some scheduled Saturdays.   During this time, professors meet with students to discuss test results and strategies for improvement. Specific assignments will be given to individual students to help them focus on areas in which they need improvement and a sharpening of writing skills. Two months prior to the administration of the FYLSE, the FYLSE Review Course becomes a class in which students earn units.

The final month of the FYLSE Review course will provide extensive simulated testing with focused feedback. Students will work on areas needing reinforcement and continue to sharpen their skills for the FYLSE.
